Family cycling through the Wye Valley

Last month Talitha went for a weekend with all of her grandparents. It was her first time away for two nights (her request) and our first time having a whole day with just Ophelia. We racked our brains trying to think of something we could do with an eighteen-month-old that we couldn’t normally do with a four-year-old and finally decided to give cycling a go.

Cycling as a family isn’t something that’s possible for us at the moment because I can’t ride a bike and we only have one baby seat. So we went to the Wye Valley in Wales for me to practise cycling. Learning to cycle is one of my 30 things to do before I turn 30 in seven months’ time. It was also a chance for Ophelia to have her first ride with Laurence. I’ve put together a little video of the experience.

I still have a way to go before I can confidently cycle but it feels like a definite possibility now. More recently, Talitha has started learning to ride a bike so let’s see who gets there first!

Ah this looks like so much fun. We went on our first family bike ride the other week. I can technically ride a bike but I am terrified of roads, steep hills and hard work so hadn’t for YEARS. It was fun, but I think I slowed them down a lot x

Ha, that sounds exactly like me Fiona. I was going to say the thought of cycling with my son in the back is daunting and in theory I can cycle. My husband took my son for the first time last week and he loved it!

I had no idea you couldn’t ride a bike Adele! You will love it once you get the hang of it. Although I have my money on Talitha learning before you – no disrespect to your ability but you know what kids are like once they want to do something. No stopping them! I hope she’s enjoying it and I hope you are too.

Oh I love cycling and I’m sure you will too. We’re still teaching the girls to ride bikes but it will be great to go for family cycling holidays eventually xx

Stunning photo and a great video. Good luck with learning to ride a bike- it’s quite scary starting off, isn’t it? I’m not a confident rider and one of our family aims is to go for family rides too but we need to all improve our riding and sort the logistics- where to ride from home or how to transport 6 bikes- eek! It will be worth it in the end though. Interested to hear how you get on x

I had to learn to ride a bike twice lol but it’s such a lovely family activity! We really got into it in Amsterdam and Bluestone but I don’t currently have my own bike. Something I’m going to look into when the baby will be old enough to go in a childs seat! good luck! x
