Babywearing addict tries theBabaSling

When I bought my first baby sling the salesperson recommended it on the basis that I was planning to get into babywearing “seriously”. She neglected to tell me that the thing about slings is this: once you’ve mastered one, you want to try them all.

So, with a stretchy and a woven wrap both securely part of our lives, I was excited to give an altogether different kind of baby carrier a go. Enter theBabaSling – a hammock style carrier and the newest addition to my addiction.

Thinking I’d be blankly flicking through the instruction manual and staring at a few youtube videos by theBabaSling, I begged the technical mind in our household to help me work it out. I needn’t have been so thick. The instructions were clear and once I put it on it was pretty intuitive. I easily worked out how to make my baby secure and comfortable in it and how to make myself comfortable too.

A note on this point, theBabaSling does not distribute the weight evenly, so while I found it comfortable for pottering around the house, it wouldn’t be my carrier of choice for, say, a hike.

To me, its real strength is the ease with which it can be slipped on, adjusted and slipped off. That makes it ideal for wearing Talitha down – that is, sticking her in and easing her off into her cot after having walked her to sleep.

Anyone who’s lived with a screaming baby knows the value of responding quickly. While I wouldn’t use theBabaSling for hours-long wear, it’s been useful for quickly donning and seating a baby crying to be picked up before the world ends.

It’s also brilliant for breastfeeding discreetly if that’s your thing. For me, I’m always moving Talitha around in lots of positions while feeding so it wouldn’t work for me (what’s a bit of nipple between strangers?) but if I was using the traditional hold the whole way through, this sling would be gold.

And get this: when we were in Cornwall this summer, Laurence swears the guy who stopped to talk slings with him was Newton Faulkner and I think it was theBabaSling I saw him carrying around. Pretty cool association? If we’re both right then I think so.

At any rate, trying this sling has only fed my baby carrier obsession. I need to try them all, I tell you. World domination by babywearing.

This is not a paid post but theBabaSling did send me a sling in forest green to sample. Obviously, I’m not anything if not honest.
